Everest Base Camp Trek

The Everest Base Camp trek is a challenging and rewarding trek in Nepal that offers an unforgettable experience for trekkers. The trek takes you through the high-altitude terrain of the Himalayas, where you can witness stunning mountain views, glaciers, and rocky terrain. The trekking route winds inside the Sagarmatha National Park where you will also come across a wide range of flora and fauna.

The Everest base camp trekking route starts from the town of Lukla and passes through several traditional Sherpa villages, including Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep, before finally reaching the base camp of Mount Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), the highest mountain in the world. We have ample acclimatization days in our itinerary and exciting side hikes too.

The Everest Base Camp trek offers trekkers the opportunity to experience the unique culture of the Sherpa people, who are the indigenous people of the region. The Sherpa people are known for their mountaineering skills and their hospitality towards trekkers. Along the trekking route, you will come across ancient monasteries, chortens, and prayer flags that reflect the Sherpa culture and beliefs.

The EBC trek offers breathtaking views of the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft), Nuptse (7,861 m/25,791 ft), and Ama Dablam (6812 m/22,349 ft). The view of the Khumbu Icefall, which is a section of the glacier that flows from the western side of Mount Everest, is particularly impressive from the base camp. Accommodation and food

The accommodation options on the Everest Base Camp trek are varied, ranging from basic tea houses to more luxurious lodges. Tea houses are simple guest houses that offer basic amenities such as a bed, blankets, and shared bathroom facilities. Some tea houses also have small restaurants that serve hot meals and drinks.

As you ascend higher, the tea houses become more basic, and you may need to share a room with other trekkers. If you prefer more comfort and privacy, there are also luxury lodges that offer private rooms, hot showers, and other amenities.

The food on the Everest Base Camp trek is typically simple but nourishing. Most tea houses and lodges offer a set menu that includes Nepali and Western dishes. The most common meal is Dal Bhat, a traditional Nepali dish that consists of rice, lentil soup, and vegetables.

Other popular dishes include momos, noodle soup, and fried rice. At higher elevations, fresh produce and meat become scarcer, and the menu options become more limited. Boiled drinking water is available in all places. You can use water purification tablets for double safety.

Trekking alone

Trekking alone to Everest base camp is not allowed anymore. Due to recent accidents among solo travelers, the Nepal government has issued no solo trekking policy. It means you either have to hire an independent licensed guide or trek with a company like ours.

It is an epic journey to the lap of the tenth-highest mountain in the world, Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m/26,545 ft). The trek begins in the lush forests of the lower Annapurna region and gradually ascends through picturesque villages, terraced fields, and rocky terrain.

And unlike the Everest base camp trek, you will get to spend the night at the Annapurna base camp.

Accommodation & Food

The Annapurna Base Camp trekking route has a range of accommodation options, from basic teahouses to comfortable lodges. Teahouses have basic amenities such as a bed, blankets, and shared bathroom facilities.

The lodges offer more comfortable and spacious rooms with attached bathrooms, hot showers, and even Wi-Fi. However, the facilities and comfort levels can vary widely from one lodge to another, so it's important to have realistic expectations.

The local cuisine in the Annapurna region is diverse and delicious. The staple food of the region is dal bhat, momo, noodles, thukpa, etc. Other popular dishes include various curries, soups, roti, porridge, pasta, thenduk, burger, etc. Many teahouses and lodges also offer bakery items, snacks, and a range of drinks.

The further you go up the trail, the more expensive and limited the food options become. This is because all food and supplies have to be carried up the mountain by porters or mules. As a result, the cost of food also increases as you go higher up the mountain.

Trekking alone

As per the recent change in trekking policy in Nepal, solo travelers cannot obtain a TIMS card on their own, which is an important permit for the Annapurna base camp trek. Solo trekkers have to hire an independent licensed guide or trek with a company like us to get all the required permits.

Tips for a successful Annapurna Base Camp trek

  • Plan your trekking route and itinerary ahead of time. Have 3 to 4 weeks of preparation time to build your stamina and endurance for the trek.
  • Make sure you have the appropriate gear and equipment. You can buy or rent most of the gear in Thamel, Kathmandu.
  • Stay hydrated and take care of your physical health. Do not rush or drink alcoholic drinks.
  • Respect the local culture and customs. Dress modestly and feel free to interact with the locals, as they are very friendly and welcoming.
  • Hire a guide: We provide a knowledgeable and experienced guide to assist you during the trek.
  • Carry enough cash as there is no ATM on the trekking route. You will need additional money to buy services that are not included in the package cost.
  • Do not touch any flowers or plants randomly along the trail.
  • Be aware of weather conditions and adjust your plans accordingly.
  • Pack light and bring essential items only.
  • Enjoy the stunning scenery and take breaks when needed.

Comparison between Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek

I. Differences in terrain and landscape

The terrain and landscape of these two treks are quite different. The Everest Base Camp trek takes through the high-altitude terrain of the eastern Himalayas in Nepal, where they can experience snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and rocky trekking routes. The elevation goes above 5,000 meters during the EBC trek.

The Annapurna Base Camp trek, on the other hand, takes trekkers through the lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional villages of the Annapurna region. Trekkers can enjoy stunning mountain views and witness the cultural richness of the region as they trek. The ascends and descends are much more frequent and long.

II. Cultural Diversity

The two treks offer different cultural experiences. The Everest Base Camp trail offers Sherpa villages, where they can experience the unique Sherpa culture and lifestyle. The Annapurna Base Camp trail takes trekkers through the Gurung and Magar villages, where they can witness the cultural diversity of the region. Trekkers can also experience the traditional way of life of the people living in the region.

III. Crowd and Popularity

The Everest Base Camp trek is more popular than the Annapurna Base Camp trek and attracts a higher number of tourists. This has led to more crowded trails and a more commercialized trekking experience. The Annapurna Base Camp trek is a bit less crowded and offers a more authentic trekking experience.

IV. Cost Comparison

The cost of both treks is similar, but the Everest Base Camp trek can be slightly more expensive due to the higher demand and the need for more expensive gear. Both treks require guides, porters, permits, accommodation, food, and transportation, which make up the majority of the cost. The Everest base camp trek starts anywhere around USD 900 to USD 1,200. Whereas the Annapurna base camp starts at USD 700 to USD 1,100.

V. Difficulty Level Comparison

Both the EBC trek and ABC trek are known as moderate to difficult treks in Nepal. However, given the high altitude and steep terrain of the Everest base camp trek, it is a bit more challenging than the Annapurna base camp trek. Trekkers need to be healthy and fit to join either trek. Both treks require 5 to 6 hours of walking on average each day. A beginner trekker can do both treks.

VI. Comparison of Accommodation and Food

Both treks offer similar accommodation options, including tea houses and lodges. The accommodation is basic but comfortable, with shared bathrooms and a variety of Nepali, Indian, and Western dishes available. The Everest Base Camp trek route has slightly better accommodation facilities, including luxury lodges because of the higher demand.
