10 Easy Ways to Make Your Trek More Sustainable
When you go trekking, especially in beautiful places like Sikkim, it is important to take care of the environment and support local communities. by making a few simple choices, you can enjoy your adventure while helping to protect the natural beauty and also support the people who live there. Here are ten easy tips to make your trek more sustainable and responsible.
Hire a Local Trekking Company
When you select a trekking company, it is important to choose one that benefits the local area. With Ashmita Trek & Tours, you support a team of skilled guides and porters who are dedicated to preserving Sikkim’s stunning landscapes and assisting local residents. This way, your trek helps both the environment as well as the community.
Eat Local Food
Choosing local food during your trek makes your experience better and helps the environment. Local dishes are fresher and have less impact on the planet than the imported ones. By eating at local teahouses and trying regional specialties, you support local farmers and even reduce the need for long-distance transportation.
Bring a Water Filter
To cut down on plastic waste and ensure you have safe drinking water, bring a portable water filter. The Goechala Trek has natural water sources where you can drink directly with the right gear, so you wont need any single-use plastic bottles. This helps keep your trek eco-friendly and your water clean.
Use Biodegradable Soaps
When washing up during your trek, use biodegradable soaps and shampoos. These products break down more easily and are less harmful to the environment. Avoid washing directly in natural water sources to prevent contamination and protect local wildlife.
Leave No Trace
The principle of Leave No Trace is crucial for keeping the Goechala Trek natural beauty intact. Pack out all your trash, avoid disturbing wildlife, and stick to marked trails to prevent erosion. This helps to protect the environment so that future trekkers can enjoy it. By being careful about your impact, you can help to keep the trek beautiful for everyone to enjoy.
Rent Some of Your Gear
Consider renting trekking gear instead of buying new items. Many local providers offer high-quality gear rentals for things like trekking poles, sleeping bags, and tents. Renting reduces waste and cuts down on the environmental impact of making and shipping new gear. It can also help to save money and space in your pack. At Ashmita Trek & Tours, we offer gear rentals to make your trek more sustainable and convenient, so you can focus on enjoying your adventure.
Shop Locally Along the Way
Support local businesses by shopping for souvenirs, snacks, and supplies from local vendors. This helps the local economy and allows you to find unique, handcrafted items that reflect the culture of Sikkim. By buying local, you also get a more genuine experience and a closer connection to the area’s traditions.
Respect the Trails
Respecting the trails is crucial for maintaining their natural beauty and ecological balance. Follow trail markers, stay on established paths, and avoid creating new trails. This helps prevent soil erosion, protects native plants, and reduces the impact on wildlife. By doing this, you can also help to keep the trails in good condition for future.

Support Local Communities
Engage with and support the local communities you meet during your trek. Join in cultural activities, help with local conservation efforts, and respect local customs. Your positive interactions help build a good relationship between trekkers and residents. Plus, you will enrich your own experience and make lasting memories.
Leave a Positive Footprint
Leaving a positive footprint means making choices that help the environment as well as local communities. This includes supporting eco-friendly projects, sharing tips on sustainable trekking, and promoting responsible tourism.
