Overview

Our Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Ri Trekcombines the classic Khumbu region adventure with an equally magnificent trip to Gokyo village. You have probably heard all about the Everest Base Camp Trek (still ranked among the world’s best trails), but few have heard about GokyoRi or Gokyo Lakes, lying just kilometers away from Everest Base Camp.

The glimmering emerald waters of Gokyo Lakes will take your breath away. It is often overlooked when trekkers visit the Everest region. Before even reaching there, though, there is a magnificent journey to be had.

The trail begins with a thrill ride from Kathmandu to Lukla via airplane. Start moving up, past lush forests of rhododendron, pine, and other trees. Take in the lovely fresh air, which quicky gets thinner as we climb up. The landscape gets increasingly more desolate and unearthly as we climb higher. Take a stop at Tengboche Monastery and receive blessings for good luck on the rest of the trip.

Several more days of ascending takes us to the famous Everest Base Camp (5380 meters). Take some photographs here and soak in the enriching moment. It’s a special moment, but the views over the next few days keep getting better. The following day, we arrive to Kala Patthar (5545 meters). Here, you stand face to face with Mount Everest at its very best viewpoint. Be stunned at the sheer size of it. These two days of visiting Everest Base Camp and then the close-up views at Kala Patthar will be cherished for the rest of your life!

Still, more beauty lies ahead at the majestic Gokyo Lakes, which are sacred to locals. You might believe so too once you lay your eyes on them. Either that night or the following morning (or both!), make your way up to GokyoRi (5357 meters), which rivals Kala Patthar as one of the best Everest region views. Watch the sunset and/or sunrise on several of the highest peaks known to man. Mount Everest (8848 meters), Lhotse (8516 meters), Cho Oyu (8201 meters), and Makalu (8481 meters) are all visible from the lookout point. Seeing the glow of the sun lighting up these mountains is mind-blowing.

From Gokyo Ri, we start our descent. The scenery is just as stunning on the way back, and you will catch the views you missed the first time. Descend all the way back to Lukla for another thrilling flight back to Kathmandu. Prepare for the lovely dinner in the eveningto celebrate the adventure of a lifetime!

Welcome to Nepal! Upon your arrival to TIA, we pick you up and take you to your hotel. In the evening, we brief you on the upcoming adventure. Overnight in hotel.

Take breakfast in the hotel and then join us for a sightseeing tour of some of Kathmandu’s famous UNESCO World Heritage sites. Throughout the day, we visit Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambunath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Our knowledgeable guides will tell you all about the historical and cultural significance of each spot. Spend your evening as wish, wandering around and preparing for the trek. Overnight in hotel.

Take an early flight to Luklato begin the journey! From your window, spectacular mountain views are all around. After the short flight, we start on the lovely trail. The route passes Sherpa villages and everything that comes with that – including their fields of crops and Tibetan Buddhist monuments. As we reach Phakding, KusumKanguru and other mountains make their presence known. Overnight at the guest house.

Beauty awaits us on our hike today. Leave Phakding and trek through lush forests. Today we cross several exhilerating suspension bridges over the DudhKoshi River and its streams. Reach Monjo and check into Sagarmatha National Park. Follow the DudhKoshi as it rises in elevation. Before Namche Bazaar, Mount Everest pops into view and glorifies the scene. Overnight at the guest house.

We spend today letting our bodies adjust to the change in altitude. The change in elevation is hard on our bodies, but we can prevent problems by taking the ascent slowly. It’s best to climb high and sleep low. So, we climb up to Khumjung and check out the Sagarmatha National Park Museum. Also, from here we have awesome views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and AmaDablam. Then, spend time exploring Namche Bazaar, which is full of shops and bakeries. There is lots to see today! Overnight at the guest house.

Wake up and take breakfast. Hike past Khumjung and again admire the stunning views. As we reach PhungiThanga, the trail splits. One way goes to Gokyo and the other to Everest Base Camp. We of course take the latter and head uphill. Pine and rhododendron forests lie on each side of the path. Soon, we arrive to Tengboche, where there is a massive monastery. Overnight at the guest house.

We see a drastic change in scenery today. Move past the tree line to the desolate, rocky alpine area. Throughout the day, we enjoy sweet mountain vistas, including views of Everest, Lhotse, and AmaDablam. After passing the Imja River, we reach Pangboche, a beautiful place to have lunch. Further along the Imja Valley lies Dingboche, after one last ascent. Overnight at the guest house.

Today is our second stop for acclimatization purposes. Again, we climb high and sleep low. Up the Chhukung Valley we go. During the hike, pristine peaks surround us. The hike is steep and strenuous, but well worth it. When we are finished, we head back down to Dingboche and rest.

Keep on moving higher today! It’s a short distance to Lobuche, but the high altitude slows us down. Until Thukla, though, the trail is relatively even. We can have lunch here and energize ourselves. Make a final push to Lobuche and enjoy the glorious views. Overnight at the guest house.

Today is an exciting day! From Lobuche, we ascend to Gorakshep and stop at the guest house to drop our stuff off. Then, with our day packs, we move towards Everest Base Camp on the steep, rocky trail. Take some photographs and soak in the feeling of being at this historical place. Check out the Khumbu Icefall, Mt. Khumbutse and Pumori. When you have had your fill, descend back to Gorakshep. Overnight at the guest house.

Today might be the most memorable day of the trek. Kala Pattharprovides the best view of Mount Everest. It might be a challenginghike getting there, but it is absolutely worth it. Besides Everest, you can see several more of the highest peaks in the world. Then, we descend to Dzongla. Overnight at the guest house.

Wake up early in the morning to cross the daunting, yet beautiful Chola Pass (5330m). Weather is best in the morning time. After roughly five hours of trekking up the rugged trail, we arrive to the pass. Take a moment to enjoy the scenic vista. Then, we take an equally steep downhill trail to Thaknak for lunch. After 2.5 hours from here leads us to Gokyo village. This is one of the most magnificent places to sleep in the Everest region. Overnight at the guest house.

Today we hike up to another astonishing viewpoint of the Everest region – GokyoRi. Watch the sun light up several more of the world’s highest peaks from the top, including Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu. It is a spectacular sight! Head back to Gokyo village to have breakfast before descending to Machhermo. Overnight at the guest house.

Rise and shine, step out of the guest house to views of Thamserku, Cholatse, and more. It’s a relaxed day of descending towards the trailhead. Pass alpine meadows and flowing streams to PhortseThanga. Have a lunch here and keep going to Khumjung. This village is famous for its monastery that has an alleged Yeti scalp. Relax the rest of the day. Overnight at the guest house.

From Khumjung, move further to Phakding. Now we are on the same trail as we took on the way up. Take a last look around Namche Bazaar before heading further down. Stop in Monjo for a rest/lunch. From here, Phakding is only about an hour and a half downhill. Relax that rest of the day. Overnight at the guest house.

It’s a bittersweet day, as we finish the Everest Base Camp with GokyoRi Trek – a great accomplishment. It’s a mostly downhill, laid-back walk, with some ups in between. Enjoy the final moments of being amidst the greatest peaks. Have a celebration for yourself in the evening. Overnight at the guest house.

After breakfast, walk on over to Tenzing-Hillary Airport for the flight back to Kathmandu. Spend the rest of your day in Kathmandu as you wish! Farewell dinner in Kathmandu in the evening. Overnight at the hotel.

We pick you up from your hotel and take you to the Airport. Thank you for trekking with Ashmita Trek and Tours! We hope to see you soon.

Must-Know

Essential Information

Best Time to take the Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Ri Trek

The best time for the Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Ri Trek is autumn (September to November) and spring (end of February to first week of May). September marks the end of monsoon season in Nepal and the beginning of clear, cloudless skies. The temperature during the day is moderate, but it gets a little chilly at night. The combined view of the colorful landscapes, partly cloudy skies and snowy mountains is priceless! Spring offers beautiful Himalayan views, pleasant weather, and colorful wildflowers. The days are warm and sunny, with pleasantly cool nights. Because spring and fall have the best weather, they also bring the most tourists, so guesthouses must be booked ahead of time. The winter and monsoon seasons are possible, but the weather can make it slightly less pleasant. The winter still has clear skies, but snow can prevent access to Base Camp. If the conditions are right, though, winter can be an adventurous time to trek. During monsoon season, the trails are quiet, but clouds can block the best views and you may have to spend some days trekking in the rain.
