Overview

Ama Dablam base camp trek is a new trekking package in the Everest region. It is more sort of an offbeat trek, however doable for beginner trekkers. The Ama Dablam base camp trail has two major steep, trodden sections- one when you'll approach Namche Bazaar (3,441 m), and another steep section goes from Pangboche (3,930 m) to the Ama Dablam base camp (4,600 m).

The Ama Dablam base camp trekking leads to the lap of Mount Ama Dablam. It is a 13 days program that lets you explore the ancient monuments in Kathmandu before the adventurous treks begin in the eastern Himalayan mountains in Nepal. The trek is very adventurous and lets you explore the Sherpa lifestyle & witness jaw-dropping mountain views.

The Ama Dablam base camp trek route is a fantastic alternative to the very famous Everest base camp trek. Unlike the EBC trek, the Ama Dablam base camp trek for 13 days does not go above 5,000 meters. The trail is also less steep. You can also combine the Ama Dablam base camp trek with the Everest base camp trek with us or add a helicopter return at the end of the trek.

Mount Ama Dablam is situated 6,812 meters above sea level. It is one of the very technically difficult mountains to climb in the Himalayas. However, trekking to the base camp of Mount Ama Dablam is not challenging at all. With our strong support, you can make it to the Ama Dablam Base Camp safely and without any hassle.

The word Ama Dablam has a beautiful meaning behind it, which means Mother's Necklace. Ama is a Nepali word for mother, whereas Dablam means a unique piece of traditional jewellery worn by Sherpa women. The hanging glacier from the mountain resembles Dablam. Similarly, the perspective of the mountain, when seen from the Tengboche village, is described as a mother's hand protecting her child on each side.

Quite interesting right? Well, what is more, interesting is the journey itself. Apart from the adventure, if we take the cultural experience and intimate interactions with the locals into consideration, the Ama Dablam Base Camp trek in Nepal lets you forget your worries, be grateful for what you have, and teach you to be humble. You will learn about the importance of simple living while unwinding and rejuvenating.

Must-Know

Essential Information

Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek Difficulty

The Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek is considered a moderate-level trek, with a few challenging sections. The trek involves a total distance of approximately 68 kilometres (42 miles) and an ascent of approximately 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) over the course of 9 to 10 days.

The trek begins in Lukla, where trekkers will spend the first night. From Lukla, the trail follows a well-marked path through the villages of Phakding and Namche Bazaar. The trail becomes steeper as it climbs to Tengboche, where trekkers will spend the third night. From Tengboche, the trail continues to the Pangboche village and continues to Ama Dablam Base Camp.

The trail to the base camp is steep and rocky, with some exposed sections that may require using hands for balance. Trekkers should be in good physical condition and have a moderate level of fitness to complete the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek.

Altitude sickness is also a risk on this trek, as the highest point reached is 4,600 meters. We take adequate time to acclimatize. Also, be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache, dizziness, and nausea. It is essential to listen to your body and take breaks as needed to avoid overexertion.

Best Time to Trek Ama Dablam Base Camp

The Ama Dablam Trek is a lower altitude trail compared to the Everest Base Camp Trek, making it possible to trek to the Ama Dablam Base Camp even in the offseasons if well prepared. However, the winter season can bring challenges due to the thick snow on the trail.

The best time to experience the clear blue sky and stunning views of the Himalayas on the Ama Dablam Trek is from March to April and from late September to November. These months offer higher visibility and no precipitation. The mountain views are surreal, and the Kathmandu Lukla flight is mostly on time.

The months of May to September are the monsoon season in Nepal, with some rainfall in Namche Bazaar and cloudy views of the Himalayas. Trekkers should be aware that the trail may be slippery during this time. December and January can still have some snowfall due to the lower altitude of the Ama Dablam Trek.

Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek Altitude

The Ama Dablam base camp trek ascends to 4,600 meters. Kathmandu is located at 1,400 meters, and the Lukla flight takes you 2,860 meters in 35 minutes. To avoid altitude sickness, you spend the night in Phakding village at 2,610 meters. From Phakding, the trail ascends to Namche Bazaar at 3,440 meters and passes by Tengboche village and Pangboche village, situated at 3,870 meters and 3,930 meters, respectively, before reaching Ama Dablam Base Camp.

Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek Food and Accommodation

You get three meals a day during the Ama Dablam base camp trek. In Kathmandu, you will get breakfast, and other meals are not covered in the package cost. The food option on the trail is very good. You will see a variety of dishes on the menu, especially in the Namche Bazaar. From famous dal bhat to roti, curries, bread, thukpa, momo, noodles, steak, burger, pizza, etc are available.

Our accommodation will be a three-star hotel in Kathmandu and lodges during the Ama Dablam base camp trekking. The lodges you stay overnight will be decent. You will get twin-shared rooms. The bedding and blanket will be clean & comfortable. The washroom may be common or private, depending upon the lodge.

Travel Insurance

There is a potential risk of altitude sickness during the Ama Dablam base camp trek. So, we need travel insurance for a backup in case of an emergency. You can buy travel insurance in your home country as Nepal does not offer it. There is no proper health care facility in the Everest region, so the quickest way we can provide medical assistance that requires more than first-aid is by air evacuating you to a hospital in Kathmandu.

Passport and visa

You need to send details of your passport at the time of booking with a few other general information. It will help us to make reservations and obtain permits under your name. The passport has to be valid for at least six months. Now for the Nepali visa, the travellers have to get it by themselves. Any failure in receiving the visa and cancellation of the trip will not affect the company. We do hold the responsibility of a visa.

You can get a Nepali visa from the Consulate office or Nepali Embassy in your home country. Likewise, citizens of many countries can obtain an on-arrival visa in Nepal at all entry points, including Tribhuvan International Airport. Make sure to check the visa status for your country.

How much luggage can I bring to the Ama Dablam trek?

You are allowed to carry 10 kg weights in your duffel bag. Porter carries duffel bags. Additionally, trekkers can carry a backpack weighing 5 kg. Any extra luggage you can store in the locker room of the hotel you are staying in Kathmandu.
